Cruel to Fish Village
Today we went to Sam Ka Tsuen, what I have now dubbed “cruel to fish” village. On the Eastern approaches to the harbour, across from the Museum of Coastal Defense, sits this small dilapidated fishing village. We had passed the place many times on the numerous junk trips we Gweilos in HK take, so we thought a visit might be in order. Well walking through the small alleys packed with fish awaiting their demise in the tanks of the numerous restaurants we came across this sight. These small little shrimp like creatures, I don’t know what they are called, but they taste like really fishy prawns, anyways. They are livly little fellas and like to jump out of the tank so this one restaurant came up with this ingeneous solution. Cut the side of a plastic bottle and put the little things in so they can’t jump out of the tank. Now, on top of the poor little creatures waiting for the pot, they spend their last moments of life trapped helpless in a plastic bottle. Disgusting and really for me just another proof of what I call peasant mentality…

Also saw what had to be the most dirty beach I have ever seen in Hong Kong. There was more trash than natural material… Yuk and people were letting their kids play in it… Disgusting… And a poiniant reminder of why we are having the beach clean up next weekend.
